Memory is one of those human traits that both connects us to and alienates us from the past. In memory, we are most aware of how much the past remains just that -- in the past. In comparison to the here and now, we are also most aware of how much has been lost to the past when we recall the things we had and the things that are no longer there. Those really early memories about London, my home, come back to me in almost every detail, even while I tend to have trouble remembering what I did and where I went yesterday or the day before. These memories, or maybe a kind of urban nostalgia, bring to my mind many traditional places in the city that are close and dear to my heart. Indeed, I feel privileged to have known these places and lived through the time of their existence. For this reason, my early years living in this city bring back the fondest memories of London. This is my version of the "real" London. Life seemed simple and my hometown seemed tiny. I felt truly content...
It was one of my favorite things to experience the aromas and noises when we entered. I always looked forward to our Sunday visits and felt a little pang of regret upon leaving. There was a park right by the cemetery where I used to play. The mists of time now lend to it a misty and almost fairy-tale type of atmosphere. I remember enjoying my happiest and most carefree hours there. A completely different kind of happiness came from the sweetshop on the corner of the high street. Here, my parents would spoil me for behaving well. The anticipation was in the approach. The closer we came to the shop, the wider my smile became, and the happier my heart.

The childhood terror and intimidation caused by the paternal image is illustrated by her association with Nazi persecution of Jews. The rejection of her brutal and life-denying father is opposed to her love and admiration for him: "Bit my pretty red heart in two. / I was ten when they buried you/.At twenty I tried to die / and get back, back, back to you." The tone of the poem
Childhood amnesia, which is commonly known as infantile amnesia, is the scarcity or lack of autobiographical recollections among adults regarding incidents that took place in their early life, especially events that occurred before they turned 4 years old. Generally, most adults have no recollections of events that took place in their early life before they turned 3 years. Childhood amnesia is usually assessed through asking adults to remember their earliest
Proust and Narrativity We read Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time - that greatest work of his the title of which is more commonly translated as Remembrance of Things Past both because of the simple beauty of his language and because of the power that he has to find our own lost pieces of time. For while he makes us interested in his past because of his marvelous descriptions of
This stream-of-consciousness writing is in a secret journal, for the writer will get into trouble if what she writes is found by Sister Theo, who "checks our letters home. We're not allowed to say anything about the school" (Sterling 12). If the journal is discovered, the girl may suffer abuse at the hands of the teachers. Writing is an act of defiance that the girl sees to be worth
The narrator concedes that "she makes me nervous. She puts me in minds of all the cruel beauties of my high school days, and I cannot look upon our red-haired rider without suffering old hot-hearted fears." (82) the young girl signals something of his childhood experiences, where his confidence was not yet developed. It reveals some of that timidity still hiding within him. There is equally present a sense of
